ROBERT TABER, DeWOLF HOPPER, EDNA WALLACE HOPPER Rare signature from the stage actor and husband to Julia Marlowe, with acting couple DeWolf Hopper and Edna Wallace Hopper signing on the verso Signatures: "Robert Taber/May 5th '96", "Edna Wallace - Hopper/ '96", "DeWolf Hopper/Dec. 12/96", 6¾x4. American Broadway actor ROBERT TABER (1865-1904) made his professional acting debut in 1886 as Silvius in As You Like It, and later joined the theatre company of actress and future wife Julia Marlowe, becoming the company's leading man. After appearing in several productions together, the couple married in 1894, though the union was short-lived; they separated in 1899 after Taber's jealousy of his wife's success. Stage actress EDNA WALLACE HOPPER (1872-1959) starred in Broadway musical comedies, including John Phillip Sousa's El Capitan (1896), the hugely popular Floradora (1900) and George M. Cohan's Fifty Miles from Boston (1907). She was one of the six wives (and many mistresses) of stage star DeWolf Hopper, who was nicknamed "the Husband of his Country." She married Hopper on June 28, 1895, but she signed this 1894 piece with his name, and continued to use it long after her 1898 divorce. (So did a later spouse, gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.) Wallace-Harper made a few silent films, but had even greater success peddling her own line of cosmetics. One of the first stars to have a facelift, she had the procedure filmed, and then played it on her "beauty tips" lecture tours. Singer, actor, comedian and producer DeWOLF HOPPER (1858-1935) starred in stage musicals, beginning in 1885. Among his best known roles were Castles in the Air (1890) and John Philip Sousa's El Capitan (1896). He excelled at Gilbert amp; Sullivan patter songs, as in The... More information available.
